Measurement Fun

The boys enjoyed spending math time outside today! As part of our linear measurement unit, we found the length and height of many things in the St. Mark's courtyard. 

"OWL" of the Week

The boys did a fantastic job being the "OWL" of the Week! We enjoyed learning about their families, interests, and special talents.

J.T. demonstrated how to make animals from towels. He learned this special talent on a cruise over our winter holiday.

N. M. got this giant lion for a Hanukkah present.

C. N. is a great basketball player!

P.S.'s  favorite book was Dinosaur Versus Bedtime!

G. R. likes NASCAR, bowling, and cake. Yummy!

Mystery Readers

The boys and I have look forward to Fridays all year because we knew a "mystery reader" was coming.  Thank you parents and grandparents for making time to visit our classroom and sharing one of your family's favorite book with us. We loved having you visit our classroom.

OWL of the Week

Another Outstanding Wise Learner in Mrs. Carrio's Class

Last week's OWL did a wonderful job sharing about his favorite things and his family. We learned that he loves pizza! He is a terrific basketball player, and his favorite color is blue. The boys really enjoyed listening to him read one of his favorite books, Henry and Mudge. Way to go!

Grandparents' Day

Grandparents' Day was a huge success! The boys and I really enjoyed having our special guests for the day.

We hope our Grandparents had a wonderful time visiting St. Mark's!

"OWL" of the Week

 This OWL of the Week was a BIG hit! The boys especially enjoyed watching him build a light circuit.

Mystery Reader of the Week

The Mystery Reader Visits Our Class

This week's mystery reader's clues had the boys a little stumped!  But when one boy heard that the special guest's favorite football team were the Trojans, he was pretty convinced it must be his mom. And he was RIGHT!

Mrs. Hoak brought a book that was written in 1910 to read to the class. The boys quickly noticed that the author knew a lot about using adjectives to make his writing interesting and fun to listen to. They also liked that the little birds in the story got into a little "mischief" just like Max in the story Where the Wild Things Are. These Marksmen know how to make "text-to-text" connections, and I think that is really awesome. You should have heard their discussion about a little "harmless" mischief.  Boys! You've got to love them.

Our Super OWL of the Week

The boys especially enjoyed our "OWL" favorite story about George Washinton's teeth. Did you know that George lost all his teeth. Poor guy!

We all enjoyed learning about this Outstanding Wise Learner this week.

Announcing the MONSTER EXCHANGE Project!

I can't beleive that tomorrow is October 1st! Time flies in first grade, and soon  MONSTERS will appear in Room 102! Each year the boys in my class participate in a wonderful reading and writing project called Monster Exchange.

We will be partnering with Mrs. Carbone's First Grade Class from Randall Carter Elementary in Wayne, New Jersey. We will start this week and hopefully finish-up the project the last week of October.  Below is the schedule the two classes will follow.

Week 1 - Each student will design and draw an orginal monster.
Week 2 - Each student will write a description of thier monster.
Week 3 - Teachers will exchange descriptions via e-mail. Each boy will be paired with a student from New Jersey. Then each student will read their partner's description and redraw their monster using only the written description.
Week 4 - Teachers will upload the written descriptions, orginal monster pictures, and redrawn monsters to the Monster Exchange site.

The OWLSTERS

A Visit from the Doctor

The boys in Room 102 are great detectives and love to solve the case of the "Mystery Reader" each week.  Our special guest this week was Dr. Graeme. The boys were interested to learn that she loved math in school, once sang the National Anthem at a Super Bowl,  and won the Dallas White Rock Marathon. The boys especially loved that she is an OWL, too ( a Rice Owl!)

Dr. Graeme read Mr. President Goes to School. We thought it was the perfect choice!

Senior Buddies

The 1st graders were very excited to meet their Senior Buddies today! The seniors came to the room and brought the boys a sweet treat. The firsties enjoyed visiting with their buddies, and they are looking forward to their next visit.

OWL of the Week

This Outstanding WIse Learner is an EXPERT fisherman! He loves to fish, and he goes fishing at least once a week at a park near his house. He even took HOOT (the class mascot) fishing, but he did all the work!  He also likes the book, Jumanji.

Awesome job! 

Another Mystery is Solved!

This week's reader was a BIG mystery! Many boys thought it must be their dad when they heard that our mystery guest liked to play golf and eat pizza. It was only when they heard that he was a St. Mark's alum that one boy knew for sure that it must be his dad.

Thank you Dr. Monga for being this week's "mystery reader" and choosing the great book, McBroom Tells the Truth. 

The boys love having their dads visit our classroom.
